Source categories identification of pm10 in Chihuahua City using a multivariate model
Main Article Content
Abstract
The particulate matter and other toxic atmospheric pollutants, have been subjects of interest and concern for many years. A requirement to instigate political decisions for human health protection is the study of the principal sources of pollution and the amount of its emissions. The objective of the study was to identify the main categorie sources that contribute to PM10 concentrations in Chihuahua City, using multivariate statistical techniques. Samples were taken from August 2004 to September 2005 in seven sites, including a control site located far from important sources of particulate matter. Sampling and gravimetric determination were developed according to EPA Method IO.2.1. By means of Atomic Absortion, Inductively Coupled Plasma and CHONS analyzer, 34 element concentrations were determined (Al, Ag, As, Au, Ba, Be, CT, Ca, Ce, Cd, Cr, Cu, Co, Er, Fe, Hg, Mg, Mn,Mo, Nd, Ni, Pb, Ru, Sb, Se, Si, Sm, Ti, Tl, U, V, W, Zn, y Zr). Elementary composition data was analyzed by means of Factor Analysis for identifying the main source categories of PM10. Four category sources were identified: Soil Dust (related to Fe-Mn-Be-As-U); Traffic (Co-Mo-V-Zr-Sm-Nd); Industry (Ti-Mg) and Mixed Source (PM10 and CT).
