Evaluación de la contaminación por metales pesados y arsénico en sedimento en embalses del estado de Chihuahua, México

Abstract
The pollution due to heavy metals and metalloids has gained a major relevance worldwide. The objective of this work was to evaluate the pollution due to big concentrations of heavy metals and Arsenic in the water sediments of the following dams: La Boquilla, Las Vírgenes and El Granero; all three are located in the State of Chihuahua, Mexico. Sediment samples were obtained in two different places at each dam during the four seasons of years 2005 and 2006. A sediment sample of 1.5 kg (3.3 lb) was taken at a distance of 1.5 m (4.92 ft) from each dam’s shore. A portion of 1 kg (2.2 lb) of the sample was used to determine the MO, pH, salinity and clay contents. The metals were analyzed after making an acid extraction. The As was analyzed using a spectrometer coupled with a hydride generator; while Cu, Pb and Zn were analyzed using ICP. A multivariate analysis with a significance level of 95% was made to the data. The results showed that As and Pb concentrations in the sediments did not vary in the three dams (P>0.05), while Zn levels varied in the three dams (P<0.05). On the other hand, Cu, Pb and Zn concentrations varied through the four seasons (P<0.05). The highest concentration of As (15.65 ± 2.49 mg kg-1), Cu (4.50 ± 1.14 mg kg-1) and Zn (118.10 ± 12.56 mg kg-1) in the three dams was found to be under the acceptable levels. Pb concentrations were found to be above the 50 mg kg-1 recommended. We consider that the three tested dams showed a strong pollution due mainly to Pb during the four seasons of a year.
