Abstract

In the city of Leon, Gto. 300 ton day-1 of toxic contaminant hide trimming is produce which is used as raw material by local rendering industry. Open pot, direct fired using sulfuric acid as catalyst is the technique used due to its low initial capital investment this process has a high contamination indexes (air, water and soil)a low water and energy efficiency and a low competivity index. The goal in this research is: reduction of acid mist formation by operational variables optimization. Experiment and design was based on low temperature rendering (LTR), the results was analyzed using Response Surface Methodology (RSM). Laboratory results confirm to optimization technique predictions: acid mist less than 3 ppm, yield 89.0-95.0%, acid added 1.24%, cooking time 35.5 minutes. Optimization of operational variables reduces the acid mist formation and increases its competivity index, improving the product quality and recovery. Process factibility at industrial level should be demonstrated.
