Coupling of an Anaerobic/Aerobic system for the wastewater treatment of slaughterhouse
Main Article Content
Abstract
A laboratory scale sequential coupling of an Anaerobic/Aerobic system (An/Ar) composed of Anaerobic Filter (AF) and Aerobic Sequential Batch Reactor (SBR) was developed to treat wastewater from a slaughterhouse. The AF was operating with Organic Loadings (OL) ranging from 3.7 to 16.5 kg·m3-d, the efficiencies of Chemical Organic Demand (COD) removal ranged 50-81% and were inversely related to the value of the OL. On the other hand, the organic matter (OM) degradation by aerobic pathway in the SBR followed a pseudo-first-order kinetic with the concentration of OM. Eighty five % of the remaining OM from the AF was eliminated within 6 h of Hydraulic Retention Time (HRT), and 95% of total OM as COD within 9 h. The beast treatment conditions in this system found to be when AF was operated with OL=11.0 kg·m3-d and HTR=24 h, whereas the SBR was more efficient at HTR=9 h.
