Phenol, 2-chlorophenol elimination and coloring in artificially contaminated waters and textile waste waters using peroxidase of chayote
Main Article Content
Abstract
Peroxidases are a class of enzymes that catalyze the oxidation of a wide variety of aromatic pollutants.
However, Horseradish (Armoracia rusticana L.), the most used source of peroxidases, does not grow well in
México. In our laboratory we are currently investigating the Chayote (Sechium edule Sw) as an alternative
new source, since it is locally available and could be able to substitute Horseradish peroxidase. The adequate
quantities of chayote peroxidase and hydrogen peroxide used for the removal of phenol, 2-chlorophenol, and
the direct black and black-22 dyes from wastewater catalyzed by chayote peroxidase were studied. The
results indicated that phenol and 2-chlorophenol were quickly removed from a formulated wastewater.
Chayote peroxidase was able to remove 88.53% of phenol and 95.6% of 2-chlorophenol. Wastewater
treatment of a textile industry effluent, containing direct black and black-22 dyes, were removed more than
90 and 80% respectively. Thus, peroxidase from chayote has a great potential for decontamination of
wastewaters containing phenolic compounds and dyes of the azo kind.
