Abstract

This paper evaluates the compost produced by four mixtures with different urban residues: sludge with aluminum sulphate, pineapple rind, and green wastes. The objective was to investigate if the final product (compost) derived from the mixtures could be usedas a soil amendment. The experimental design was a factorial 2x2, with two replicates. Transformations were observed in physical andchemical parameters: pH, C/N ratio and percentage of aluminum. Biodegradation was observed in the mixtures and it increasedaluminum concentration in the compost. Later, seeds of lettuce (Lactuca sativa) were seeded on the produced compost and the aluminumconcentrations were determined within the plants after 35 days of growth. Aluminum concentrations in the dry matter (d.m.) of the plantsof lettuce ranged from 1.9 to 4.8 mg Al/ g d.m. The primary conclusion of this study suggests that the compost obtained from sludgemixed with aluminum sulphate cannot be used as a soil amendment because the aluminum is accumulated in the plants.
