Monitoring air pollutants in Chihuahua City (Northern Mexico) as a tool for air quality management
Main Article Content
Abstract
Comparison of the air pollutant measurements with health standards (NOM) helps to design air quality control programs. In this study we developed a pseudo-real time monitoring system in which the concentration data from particulate matter smaller than 10 μm (PM10), ozone (O3) carbon monoxide (CO) and sulfur dioxide (SO2) were analyzed (data obtained during 2007). The monitoring site was located in the northern area of Chihuahua City. The databases contain the event identification, date/time, pollutant concentration, and an error code. The website allows visualizing the real-time pollution levels and generates reports and graphs of specified time periods. The system has an intranet section which generates statistical reports in XLS format. The system also has the capability to manage information of additional stations. Air quality was determined according to health standards (NOM), and an air quality index already used in Mexico (IMECA). Among the pollutants monitored, only PM10 showed values above 100 IMECA points. According to the applicable standard, levels of PM10 barely met the established limits for both 24 hours averages (120 μg/m3) with 117 μg/m3, as well as the annual average (50 μg/m3) with 47 μg/m3. Ozone was the second largest pollutant, as their concentrations were also close to the limit set by the applicable standard to the maximum daily 8-hour mobile average (0,080 ppm) with 0,076 ppm. Concentrations of CO and SO2 are far below the standards limits, so the air quality for this pollutant was considered adequate. Furthermore, it was observed characteristic behavior of the pollutants along the day and during the year.
