Salty groundwater desalinization processes design by reversible electrodialysis chemical simulation, for human consumption
Main Article Content
Abstract
In the Valle del Mayo region, some communities do not have access to fresh water sources but have the option to extract brackish water from subterranean sources. The objective was to apply a mathematical model simulating RED to estimate actual design parameters and evaluate the feasibility of implementation in two communities: Adolfo López Mateos and Las Águilas. Methodology consisted of processing data on the physicochemical properties of water from communities with salinity problems. This data was then used on Ionics enterprise's WatSys 2.1 and MathWorks, Inc.'s MatLab 7.0.1 software, which were used to simulate the optimal parameters of the product water and the size of the RED plant, respectively. The results are the determination of the removal efficiency parameters and the calculation of a real design that will supply the selected communities with an appropriate volume of water fit for human consumption, up to the year 2030. The treated water was compared with the parameters demanded by drinking water safety regulations. The most severe case of salinity presented itself in Las Águilas, with 18,200 mg l-1 TDS on intake and was simulated until it complied with the Mexican NOM-0127-SSA-1994 potable water parameters.
