Abstract

The suitable handling of dangerous residues implies to reduce to the minimum the adverse impacts to the atmosphere as far as its generation, use, recovery and final disposition. Within the regulating list of dangerous residues are the used antifreezes, since they contain fuel signs, metallic particles, corrosive products and sometimes sticking material. At the moment the glycol production from natural gas and petroleum represents a great problem given to the present economic conditions and the use more and more limited of the natural resources, with the present work proposes a system of distillation like an alternative process for the recovery of ethylene glycol and diethylene glycol, main components of the antifreezes. One compared the efficiency of the simple distillation and the fractional distillation in the separation and recovery of glycols in used antifreezes. The obtained results showed a greater percentage of heavy metal removal (Cu, CD, Pb, Fe, Mn and Cr) with the simple distillation that with the fractional distillation and with respect to the recovery of ethylene glycol and diethylene glycol, a recovery was observed for ethylene glycol average of 49% with the fractional distillation whereas with the simple distillation of 44% and for the case of diethylene glycol it presented a recovery average of 76% and 66% for the divided one and simple respectively. Reason why the fractional distillation turned out to be more efficient when obtaining itself a greater percentage of recovery of glycols.
