Abstract

Shrimp farming in northwest Mexico has been affected in recent years by the presence of high-impact diseases. This situation has caused producers start to take biosecurity measures. Despite the progress the region remains vulnerable to attack by pathogens, reason why it was decided to make a diagnosis in shrimp farms of central and southern region of Sonora, in order to detect gaps in compliance biosecurity measures proposed by national and international agencies. The results indicated that the implementation of biosecurity in the region is poor, especially in the control of fauna harmful and supporting the immune system of shrimp. The only items that had scores close to 80% on average were the epidemiological surveillance and monitoring, and care of water quality. Also found that there is heterogeneity and polarization between systems of cultivation in terms of trained personnel, Infrastructure and conditions, which hampers the implementation of a comprehensive biosafety applicable the area. Private farms more are strict in implementing biosecurity measures, because they have access to quality inputs, better food, more control over the use of antibiotics, use of immunostimulants, among others. We conclude that the application of biosecurity measures requires training, teamwork, organization, discipline, perseverance economic resources and records of the measures implemented. Also, to be effective biosecurity, must not only be implemented by a group of producers but for everyone, backed by research institutions and authorities.
