Carbon content in the aboveground biomass in different land use systems in the tamaulipan thornscrub
Main Article Content
Abstract
In the ecosystems of the state of Nuevo Leon, there is limited information about carbon sequestration, which is a reason to initiate works to establish the methodological basis for carbon capture measurement and the inventory, for certification purpose, as a future alternative from generation of economic resources for the habitants of the area. Estimated the carbon content in the aboveground biomass was estimated in different land use systems in a fraction of tamaulipan thornscrub. The study was conducted in the ecological reserve of the Forest Sciences Faculty, UANL, and in two contiguous areas, with secondary vegetation; study systems were primary scrub, traditional agriculture and clearcut. For the carbon content estimation four rectangular plots of 250 m2 were established on each system, we measured the diameter (d0.10) and height (h), biomass was calculated using allometric equations. The primary scrub has the highest carbon content with 11.70 MgC ha-1 in the aboveground biomass, the value is drastically reduced in the recovered systems with 4.67 MgC ha-1 in clearcut and 2.98 MgC ha-1 in traditional agriculture. Tamaulipan thornscrub has great potential as carbon storage, presents a wide capacity of mitigation due to its important surface.
