Abstract

Lead is a heavy metal that causes toxic effects on the gastrointestinal tract, renal system and central and peripheral nervous systems, and interference with enzyme systems involved in heme synthesis. There are reports that mentioned that fungi possess skills in uptake of heavy metals, due to some components of their cell wall. The biosorption of lead on fifteen fungal biomasses was studied in this work. It was found that the biomass of Mucor rouxii IM-80, M. rouxii mutant and Mucor sp-1 and 2, were more efficient to remove Lead (determined spectrophotometrically at 510 nm using dithizone as the complexing agent) achieving the following percentage of removals: 100%, 94.1%, 93.1% and 86.3%, respectively, at pH 6.0 at 28oC after 12 hours of incubation, 100 rpm, with 1.0 g/100 ml of fungal biomass.
