Abstract

Salinity effect on water absorption, seeds germination, and growth variables at the early stages of (Triticum aestivum L. and T. durum L.) was evaluated under controlled conditions in a germoplasm formed by 12 varieties. Saline solutions were formulated based on Sodium Chloride (NaCl) adjusted to electric conductivities (EC) of 4; 8; 12; 16 dS.m-1. As control treatment distilled water with an EC of 0.02 dS.m-1 was used, those that were deposited in Petri badges where seeds were settled down. Water absorption (AA) and germination percentage were the evaluated variables. Lapsed 15 later days after germination plants height, roots length, and dry matter accumulation were evaluated. A totally randomized experimental design was used with six repetitions for treatment. As results a negative and significant correlation was obtained between EC and seeds water absorption. The existence of considerable variability in salinity response of the germoplasm was observed, being germination and root length variables thouse of major differentiation degree varieties, being formed three groups according to it saline stress tolerance in the varieties. INIFAT RM-26, INIFATRM-36, INIFAT RM-30, INIFAT RM-37 and Cuba-C-204 classified as tolerant group; CIRNO C2008 as moderately tolerant, and TH 32 W, INIFAT RM-29, INIFAT RM-31, INIFAT RM-32, Banámichi C2004 and Júpare C2001 varieties, the susceptible ones.
