Abstract

In soil, 75,000 ppm of automotive waste oil represents a high concentration of aliphatic, aromatic hydrocarbons and traces of heavy metals; therefore, it is considered a hazardous waste according to the Mexican laws of environmental regulation, since it causes loss of fertility and inhibits microbial life. In Mexico, the maximum allowed concentration of residual automotive oil in the soil is 4,400 ppm in accordance with NOM-138-SEMARNAT / SSA1-2003. Based on the above, the following research objectives were proposed: a) biostimulate a soil contaminated by 75,000 ppm of automotive waste oil, using detergent, mineral solution, vermicompost, Phaseolus vulgaris as green manure and hydrogen peroxide and b) demonstrate the biorecuperation of the soil through the sowing of Lactuca sativa. In the soil, the variable-response of the biorecuperation was determined by the initial and final concentration of automotive residual oil by the Soxhlet method; To evaluate biorecuperation, L. sativa was planted, where the seedling phenology was recorded: plant height and root length; biomass: fresh and dry aerial / radical weight. The experimental data were analyzed by ANOVA / Tukey HSD P <0.01%. The results indicate that the biorecuperation of soil contaminated with 75,000 ppm of automotive residual oil, minimized it to 625 ppm in 110 days, compared to the negative control soil where the natural attenuation decreased it to 51,440 ppm. In biorecovered soil the growth of L. sativa showed the absence of automotive residual oil derived from biorecuperation.
