Evaluation of the application of co-substrates in the elimination of aromatic amines in a denitrifying anaerobic process
Main Article Content
Abstract
Different industries such as textile, paper, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical are a sector that produces a large amount of wastewater, which are discharged into the aquifers, rivers, and lakes, without giving them a conventional treatment, which generates great pollution problems. Some studies have shown that degrading the allura red azo dye results in the breaking of the azo bond, causing the activation of aromatic amines like as aniline and p-cresidine , which are a problem for the public and environmental sectors. The objective of this project was to evaluate the elimination (as well as the effect of a co-substrate) under denitrifying conditions of the aromatic aniline and p-cresidine amines. Initially, the behavior of the aromatic amines aniline and p-cresidine was studied separately, and then in a mixture at a concentration of 50 mg/L, having an unfavorable result for aniline, therefore the study with p-cresidine was continued, since this amine had a removal percentage of 40.5 ± 2.1%. Kinetics were performed for a period of 216 hours each, separately, to evaluate the effect of sodium acetate and methanol as co-substrates at a concentration of 50 mg/L. The percentages of p-cresidine removal were 22.7 ± 1.01% using methanol and 22.8 ± 1.43% with sodium acetate, showing that the co-substrate did not contribute to the oxidation process of the amine; instead, a favorable effect was observed in the elimination of nitrate, since the elimination percentages reached up to 56 ± 1.4% in the presence of acetate, and 80 ± 0.39% with methanol.
