Abstract

A great number of interactions between living organisms take place in soil. Among them, microbial communities play an important role in nutrient cycling, their availability and subsequent assimilation by vegetation, and consequently, in the maintenance of soil fertility, and also take part in the provision of numerous ecosystem services by this resource. Such is the case of plant growth promoting microorganisms (PGPM) that, through specific mechanisms, are able to regulate plant growth, to improve plant nutrition, to control pathogens and to provide tolerant characteristics to abiotic and biotic stress. Global food demand of the growing population and the current negative impacts of agriculture on soil make it imperative to develop more sustainable agricultural practices that guarantee food security at affordable costs, obtaining better yields, lower environmental impacts and high nutritional products. One of these alternatives is the use of agro-biotechnological potential PGPM from microbial culture collections, after their metabolic and molecular characterization, and in vitro and field validation, for the development of microbial inoculants. It is necessary to continue increasing the scientific and technological bases that allow us to improve the understanding of microbial interactions and, at the same time, the production of viable and effective bioproducts.
