Abstract

The culture of shrimp L. vannamei in low salinity water faces some important challenges such as nutrition and release of residual nutrients. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of diets formulated with different sources and percentages of proteins and their relationship with the release of nitrogen compounds. Six diets were formulated using two sources of protein: (PV) soybean meal and (PA) fishmeal; each with three percentages of protein; low (22-25%), medium (32-35%) and high (41-45%). Release bioassays were performed for two sizes of L. vannamei (2.71 ± 0.42 g and 5.68 ± 0.82 g). The results show that NH4-N, and NID increased significantly (P <0.05) as the percentage of protein and the size of the shrimp increased. NO2-N and NO3-N remained without differences between the different treatments. These results contribute to a greater understanding of the nutrition, generation and release of residual compounds from a low-salinity L. vannamei culture. The use of different sources and percentages of proteins in shrimp diets can support sustainable aquaculture development.
