Effects of the mechanical-chemical treatment with CuCl2 on the porosity of a natural Cuban Mordenite
Main Article Content
Abstract
The porosity characteristics and CuCl2 retention of a natural Cuban Mordenite of Palmarito deposit were determined by being treated with different proportions of CuCl2. The amounts of CuCl2 retained by the solid were calculated by measuring the concentration of the CuCl2 solutions by visible UV photo-colorimetry with a wavelength of 600 nm. The studies of the mineral pore volume variations were determined by calculating the pore volume of each sample by the adsorption isotherms of N2 at 77 K by the Dubinin Filling Micropore Volume Theory method. From the experimental results it could be concluded that: The amount of CuCl2 retained by the MPCu0,1-04 compound increased linearly as the amount of CuCl2 added to the natural Mordenite increased. After the mechano-chemical treatment, part of the CuCl2 is retained with such force in the mineral that it can withstand the extraction with H2O. The pore volume value of the natural Mordenite treated with mechano-chemistry without CuCl2, was approximately four times the pore volume of the natural Mordenite not treated with mechano-chemistry. The mean pore dimensions of the Mordenite originated during the mechano-chemical process were larger compared to those of the natural Mordenite. The pore volume value of the mechano-chemical treated natural Mordenite with CuCl2 were in all cases more than twice that of the natural Mordenite, but less than the pore volume value of the mechano-chemical treated natural Mordenite without CuCl2. In general, with the mechano-chemical treatment, the pore volumes and pore dimensions of the natural Mordenite can be varied.
