Resumen

Aquaculture is a safe and sustainable food environment globally, being a fast growing industry. One of the strategies used to meet the high demand is intensive production, using industrialized feed and high planting densities. Although this type of production generates problems such as stress, limited growth yields and exposure to infectious diseases, generating the need to improve the growth performance, efficiency and resistance to infectious diseases provided by aquaculture feeds. An alternative to this problem is the use of additives in the formulation of basal diets. Among these additives are probiotic bacteria (Bacillus, Clostridium, Lactococcus, Pediococcus, Pseudoalteromonas), plants (leaf, root or seed), plant extracts or combination, and algae (macro and micro). These additives have effects on growth performance, survival and composition (proteins, lipids, ash and moisture); digestive function, feed conversion factor, and digestive enzymes; intestinal microbial communities (increase in beneficial microorganisms and decrease in harmful); immune response (gene expression), disease resistance, total hemocyte count, phagocytic activity and antioxidant enzymes. This review aims to explain the use of different additives (bacteria, plants, and algae) in basal diets for different species of farmed shrimp and their effect on growth, survival, and immune system stimulation.
