Abstract

This study focuses on the impact of forest fires in arid and semi-arid areas of Mexico, where xerophytic shrub land prevails. The presence of fire induces significant alterations in vegetation and soil properties, conditioning sustainability in the short and medium term. Although fires are less frequent in semi-arid and arid zones compared to other ecosystems, they can cause considerable damage. The main objective of this study was to describe the vegetation and soil in six experimental areas, three affected by a fire in 1972 and three as control sites. Data on plant diversity, soil properties, and morphological adaptations were collected. Fifteen species were recorded, with Quercus pringlei being the most abundant. Shannon and Simpson indices revealed variations in diversity, indicating moderate diversity in fire-affected areas and high diversity in areas unaffected by fires. Dominance analysis showed high relative dominance in burned areas, with decreasing values in unaffected areas, suggesting a more equitable distribution. Similarity analyses revealed some differences in species composition. Correlation analysis revealed results suggesting the existence of similar patterns or interrelationships between the measured variables in the two types of sites, with more pronounced findings in the unaffected sites. This study provides valuable information about vegetation response to fires in semi-arid areas, emphasizing the importance of understanding these impacts for the conservation and proper management of such ecosystems.
