Abstract

In Mexico, regional culicidfauna studies based on periodic and systematic collections are scarce. In the State of Jalisco, previous studies have allowed the registration of around 43 species included in eight genera. The University Center of the Coast (CUC), of the University of Guadalajara, located in the Jalisco municipality of Puerto Vallarta, is an area in which no studies have been carried out on the number of species of culicid mosquitoes. The objective of the study was to determine the species of mosquitoes present within the University Center of the Coast (CUC), of the University of Guadalajara, and their potential importance of disease transmission in the student community. The collection of larvae was carried out between the months of May 2017 to October 2018 from the visual inspection of various types of artificial water reservoirs. For their taxonomic determination, the mosquitoes were preserved in 70% ethanol to be identified at the Institute of Ecology (INECOL), in Xalapa, Veracruz, Mexico. A total of nine species of mosquitoes belonging to the genera Culex (6 species), Aedes (2 species), and Toxorhynchites (1 species), were registered. The most abundant species were Culex coronator (Dyar and Knab), with 149 specimens and Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus), with 127 specimens. These results constitute the first record of mosquito species in a suburban area of Jalisco. Most species are potential vectors of human disease.
